At the initial years of my Ankylosing Spondylitis, I was tempted to try alternate treatments like Ayurveda mainly due to the rapid cure of my uncle's Ankylosing Spondylitis. I was advised to undergo navarakizhi followed by vasti.
The fact is that almost for 45 days I was relieved of my pain and stiffness completely. Unfortunately the symptoms of Ankylosing Spondylitis re-surfaced after that period. Though I continued taking ayurvedic medicines almost for a year after that, the symptoms did not subside unlike my uncle's history.
Ayurveda considers each individual as different entity. Unfortunately in my case it did not work. My opinion is that if it is possible to try, go ahead, and if your body responds to it consider yourself lucky as ayurveda doesn't have any side effects.
I did get something out of Ayurveda. I was able to keep my psoriasis under control using an Ayurvedic oil called Dandapala (Scientific name:Wrightia tinctoria)coconut oil. This could be easily made by immersing the leaves in a earthern plate filled with coconut oil and then keeping it in bright sunlight for approximately 3 days. Apply this oil often on the affected areas.

Hey . did you take up exercises of some sort were they helpful?
I am also planning to switch to Ayurveda. Could you tell if you runcle for whom it worked is he still pursuing with Ayurveda?
Also, any idea what was different in your case?
I am pretty nervous going ahead :(
The greatest mistake that I did was that i didn't do much exercise. Do swimming. when you dont have active inflammation you can walk as much as you can. Avoid running, jumping or any other activities which can cause flare up of inflammation. My uncle still continues his ayurvedic medication atleast once in a year. Do not stop your Allopathy medicines unless you are sure ayurveda is working. Consistently check your ESR and keep a track of your inflammation. Do exactly as your Rheumetologist advices. Don't stop NSAID's when inflammation is down.
These are some of the things that you have to be very careful
Hi,
My name is Rajesh Daswani. My number is 9820544069. You seem to have a lot of knowledge on this disease and I have also tried a number of different treatments etc. My disease also commenced when I was 17 years of age. Call me up. Lets exchange notes. Or you can email me on rajesh.tropislex@gmail.com
You covered exercise, which you are right is very important part of the fight against this disease. But there is something even more important. its DIET. I will try to post some tips on a good DIET which helps CUT DOWN inflamation. I don't believe in NSAID's as they ruin your stomach. But yes, by giving up NSAID you have to fight stiffness and Pain on a daily basis. Yoga and Accupuncture helps a great deal and so does swimming.
I have also been dealing with Ankylosing Spondilitis for over 10 years now (since my early 20s) and the only thing that has helped me has been following Ayurvedic guidelines in terms of doing yoga and changing my diet. If you do not change your diet or go back to what you were eating before then your disease will return as poor digestion among other things is what causes it. I hope that helps (of course I'm not a trained Ayurvedic doctor, my advice is to seek one out). It has and is helping me. I have been off of NSAIDs for over two years now and am still improving.
Take care
hi I am also suffring AS from age of 15 year of age i am 28 year old now. my AS is detected 2 years back I am having pain in buttock and stiffness in back i have taken alopathy treatment for 1 year now i am taking ayurveda treatment from last 6 months and its effect is quite ok even after stoping pain killer like sulfasalazine and powergesic I can do my day to day activity As for excercise i do it occasionaly and find it effective . I Donot know if it will affect my married life feature after geting married . please share your result of married life with AS

swapnil patil
hi swapnil
you can get married, but its important you tell ur partner how bad it can get.. so that the person doesn't feel cheated later..
sulfasalazine is not a pain killer. it is a disease modifying drug.
allopathy can only give u pain killers like Muvera, brufen etc which can give temporary relief
i suggest the following program
a)Exercise/swimming/physiotherapy and yoga
b)Accupuncture/ayurveda
c)Diet
Please read up as much you can online and try to watch ur self to see what suits u best
all the best with ur fight against the disease.
Hi,
I am originally from India but currently living in USA. I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylytis last year in Oct. Doctor found that my HLA-B27 was positive and I had been getting back for over an year. I have been taking Embrel injection for almost 10 months now. Recently, my left eye became red and doctor told me that I have UVEitis. They have given me some eye drops.
Did any one also get red eye? If yes, then what did you do?
Can you also share what changes you had to do in your diet to keep AS away?
well thats true.. we have to actively watch ourselves. Red eye is common but if you are taking enbrel then i wonder why the disease is still active in the body ?

Hi I am suffering AS since 1996. Now I am sick of taking tradional medicine and now I am facing side effects. So i want to move in Ayurvedic treatment. Can anybody give me a address of Ayurvedic medicine or hospital address where I can go. I really need one. u can contact me asad2803@gmail.com
hi to all.. am a doctor( MD pathology,PGIMER CHANDIGARH),indeed i had my first attack of sacroilietis during my final year MBBS times.. did the entire arthritic profile and found to be HLAB27 positive.. took bridging theraphy with NSAIDS,STEROIDS AND SULFA then got some relief i discontinued the medications and started coping up stiffness and pain by being more active in work/day today activities.. still used to get attack at times.. after an extensive search on research papers many improvements have come in this field.. but let it be any kind of medication system the basic components are analgesics and give short term relief only.. the success stories quoted may be cases of reactive arthritis in whom the disease follows a variable course from time to time only 1% of b27 positive people get AS so some strong predisposing factor may be other genetic factors or environmental(like klebsiella a kind of gut bacteria ) can predispose to disease development
first never lose courage this increases your pain....
whenever i have rest pain i feel god wants me not to take rest indulge yourself in some activities
swimming is a wonderful exercise that can do magic try it..
rest take some medications to combat acute episodes.. since am not an ayurvedic doctor i cant comment on those drugs.... i my experience with kidney biopsies i have seen premature renal failure in some people on desi medications so be careful get away from quacks lets fight AS its possible more than a curse its a blessing in disguise.... jai hind
hi
Hi!
My husband has AS and little did i know how bad the disease is till we got married and stayed together as husband and wife. He told me before we got married that he has mild back pain and i had no idea about AS. I don't want to think i was cheated because i loved him anyway but i think it is important for anyone who has the disease to confess before marriage as part of honesty. Being a Filipina who got married to an Indian who has AS, I'm determined to support my husband as much as I can, now doing my research that may help.
Hi anonymous,
I appreciate for the support that you do for your husband. On the otherhand AS is not such a disease that will cuase your life hell. By doing proper medication and exercise AS patient will lead life properly.

Pavan Jhawar.
Hi Pavan,
First of all, do not be discouraged nor loose your hope..............We are fighting our battle just like every other human on this earth is doing, the only difference being - Name of the battle is different.
Even I am suffering from AS for last 8 years and already am walking on walker. Pain - 24 hrs a day. Stiffness - more or less the same as like you. New developments in disease state - definately positive. So what is the good news - " Life is Beautiful". Pavan, this is our life and you can decrease the pain by "acceptance" or worsen it by "refusing to accept" and thus increasing your mental stress. Refusing to accpet it worsens our state. When you are down with - say - fever, do you not accept that your body temp has increased and you take appropriate steps to bring it back to normal. Same is the case here - accept that you have AS and you need to make yourself comfortable.
Engage in things that you like to and are capable of doing. Do not overstress yourself, mentally as well as physically. when body demands rest, give it. Still to keep the muscles functioning, you will have to do routine excercises. Instead of having pain 24 hrs, complete your exercise discipline and suffer for an hr or so, but you will have better part of the day with less pain and stiffness.
Also, check out www.zerotherapy.com. It did help me a lot.
AS being a type of autoimmune disease, our immunity becomes very weak during the progression of this disease. So, keep doing atleast 30 mins of Pranayam and Kapalabhati and you should be fine.
As for the stiffness, when it is more I use hot almond (soaked for min 5hrs and skinned)and rice kheer for lunch, it helps. This especially happens when we take head bath. As much as possible try to keep your spinal cord warm, meaning do not sleep on cold floor (avoid sleeping down, use cot), avoid ice-creams, cold drinks, jackfruit, melon, coffee (very harmful, non-veg, ...............I mean, I have identifed these things as causing the gas levels to increase in my body further resulting into increased inflammation. Also, masoor and blackpepper, especially powdered one. So, make a list of your daily food intake, and very soon you will know what to eat and what not to.
Rest, believe in God. There is nothing like feeling Him next to you and getting his help whenever you ask for it.Nothing is uncurable...........Just tiem has to be right.
Best of luck to all there, and May God bless all of us.
Thanks Anonymous.. U r true. We have to accept the fact that we have AS. And just do a little extra work than a normal human being(therapy, exercises) and leave rest to God. That s all. And one more to add the list of food not to be taken given by u is Milk Products. My doctor suggested not to take any milk products as it takes time to get digested and results in Gas formation. For AS patients, daily intake plays the major role. Avoid food which ever takes lot of time in getting digested. I am now undergoing a massage therapy and feeling little better than other days but right now i cant tell u how much it is helpful. But i will diffinitly update here if i find any improvement after the therapy. Please friends do continue posting if there is any development or worse situation so that we can prepare our self to that level too.:(
Wish u all a very best of luck. take care.:)
Friends this is sanjay here.

Hii,
I am 20 year old and I am suffering from AS from 17.After taking treatment for 4 mnths i did'nt have much problem till last year. First my hip started to pain as in past after that I got swelling in my left knee for 3 months.I am taking ayurvedic medicine from past 8 months and also started taking allpathy now. The main problem is I am in merchant navy and my disease is at begining stage so I dont have problem with my medicals.
Just I am nervous about my future. What to do and what not to do??
Now I am doing Yoga for 1 to 2 hrs dailiy from past 5 months. It has helped but still slight pain is there in my hip.
Also I am fine now by reading that yaa I am not alone suffering there are people like me and it has give me motivation to fight.
The main problem with ayurveda is medicine dont act fast but for future its good.
Can any one help me about homopathy thats the last thing remaing to try is there any good doctor available for homopathy plzz suggest.
@ Pawan Jawahar,
I am not much convinced about milk and milk products. My experience is - if our immunity is strong enough, pains are less. Check you Hb routinely along with ESR. I take vit suppliments as my Hb is always on lower side. As for milk products, they are definately needed for strength of bones. Guess in our case, rarification of bones is another one thing we need to keep check on. So think about this. As for complex food items which take some time to digest - i agree with you.
@Anonymous - Nov 27.
Don't worry much. This will put unnecessary stress on your system. Just take life one day at a time and fearlessly go ahead and enjoy it. Time will always tell you whats in store. Let it do its work.
I know, at this age things are not clear. Lot of fear, lot of questions, lot of distrust. But, my experience says "if you believe in victory, victory will believe back in you". You will be fine and you will find your way.
May God bless all of us.
I've come accross various suggestions and advices during my 15 years of AS maintanance. At present there are no finite medicines in any stream of health care. The only thing that works is exercise. Along with proper medication exercise will do miracles. Try swimming. Dont fall for any advice.. Keep yourself busy. Dont sit idle.. do exercise daily. Swim if possible and keep away from stress. Try to live a painless life.
Hellow Every one,
